Many ESL students use personal dictionaries upon coming to the class. As I was thinking about this, I understand that it is a great tool, but then I wondered at what point do you cut the students off from using them or just let them continue using them? They are helpful especially when they first come to the US. I think I would use the personal dictionaries as an addition to assignments, but make sure that on tests and exams it was clearly stated whether or not these students could use their personal electronic dictionaries.
How would you determine when students were "ready" to not have their dictionaries? Do they use them in ESL class as well as in "regular" class? I think that it would be appropriate to let them use their electronic dictionaries whenever in my class. One of my only quandaries is vocabulary tests. How would other students feel without dictionaries? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the test?
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool asset that the ESL kids have access to! Technology (in this sphere at least) ROCKS! :)
